Hi y'alls.

So I guess first off, thanks Mike for making this badass site. Wow. You're cool. And smart.

Okay, so now for bio-stuff. Well, I moved to Austin from San Angelo 5 years ago. In that time I've animated for a few studios and I've done some illustration too. If you're really interested in all ...Expand text.

The Basics

This is a series of ink drawings that were digitally composited and colored.

History

'Aspen' was the first illustration in a series I worked on last summer at Epoch. The feathers in the background of Aspen belong to the crow in the 'Crow Shirt,' and the Rose Tower exists in this same universe.

My Inspiration

Aspen is actually the name of my neice. She was born October of 2005, and has inspired many drawings. My sister is going to have a second child in a few months, so I'm guessing you'll see a few more baby drawings from me.

The Basics

Chrysanthemums is mainly acrylic, but there is some paper and nail polish in there too. Protective materials used include Rosewood stain, texturing medium, and polyacrylic varnish. The wood is 3/4" thick, and the sides are painted dark brown.

History

This large painting is based on a smaller study called 'Ferns.' It was created for the East Side Studio Tour.

The 'Crow' illustration has been silkscreened onto this light weight vintage-like tee with black waterbased inks.

About the Illustration

'Crow' began as an ink illustration. It was a spin-off of my 'Aspen' illustration. Originally I intended to do a serial. The feathers in the background of the 'Aspen' illustration belong to the crow depicted in this shirt.

The Prototype

Even though the Crow shirt featured in Artopium is silkscreened, I actually have a hand-painted prototype. Aside from the many hours it took me to draw the Crow, it took me 6 hours to actually hand paint the original shirt using a light board.

The Basics

Gluttony is a pencil sketch that was digitally colored.

History

I drew Gluttony for the purpose of the Pandora's Box show at Jerry's Artarama. The theme of the show was gluttony, and I thought I would be all cool and stuff and illustrate a slight twist on the deadly sin. However, when I went to the actual show, I didn't see any paintings that followed the theme, so I ended up being the conventional one. Ah well. It was a good experience. I tend to draw flowers, birds, and babies a lot, so drawing something dark like this was a great challenge. Additionally, I decided to break from my usual nouveau-type inking style in favor of a raw-looking pencil sketch. Yeah, this was a fun one.

Meaning

Okay, this one actually does have meaning, in case you were wondering. The main point I'm making is that gluttony for material things is just as bad as food-gluttony, and despite its apparent social acceptability, I think its just as gross. A lot of women have told me that they really like this piece because it speaks to their own self-perception issues. To those ladies, yeah, I know. Me too.

The Basics

The original painting is acrylic on 3/4" plywood. Its creation took about 7 hours and it was painted in the Epoch parking lot during Artopium's first roving party. Copper wire in back for mounting.

History

This painting is entirely random. I just doodled until it stopped sucking. In the process I figured out a few techniques I'd like to use in future paintings.

"K is for..." is an ink drawing that was digitally colored.

History

I drew 'K' for the Alphabet Show at The Stash. Like with Gluttony, I decided to break away from my usual nouveau-type inking style in favor of for this cartoony/vinatage look. K is for kitchy. Anyway, I was all pleased with myself over this piece and then the Stash informed me that they the show was full and they didn't have room for me! Sad day. That's okay though. I'm glad this piece was created. I like it.

This is mainly acrylic, but contains some spray-art and other media as well.

History

Ferns is a study I did for a much larger painting called 'Chrysanthemums'. I like Ferns just as much though. I guess it is also with this painting that I learned the technique of painting with nail polish.

The 'Rose Tower' illustration was silkscreened onto a boatneck tee with black waterbased inks. The fabric is very light.

About the Illustration

The Rose Tower began as an ink drawing in the 'Aspen' series of drawings. In my imagination, this tower of roses exists in the same universe as Aspen, and is perhaps what the baby is looking at. The feathers in the background of the Aspen painting belong to the Crow depicted on the 'Crow Shirt,' to give you an idea of scale.
