Anticipation

Definition and background:

In part-writing, an unaccented, non- harmonic note that belongs to and is repeated in the harmony immediately following; i.e., one or more harmonic voices or parts moving to their particular position in a new chord before the other parts, or before the accent. a note sounded before the chord to which it belongs, so that at first it is heard as a discord with the preceding chord
